Bridget Mary (known as Mary later in life) was baptised in St Francis’ Church on 6 October 1856, her sponsors being John Whelan and Winifred McNamara.
In 1885 Mary, aged 28, married 43 year old Michael Sheahan in Carlton. Michael had been born in Foynes, County Limerick c1841.
Michael was a grocer, and they lived in Lygon Street, their address being shown progressively as number 93, then 97, then 95. The couple went on to have eight children, but one’s heart goes out to them having lost so many of their children at a young age, three in infancy, and three more before the age of 38.
Michael lived to the age of 80 years, dying at Carlton on 18 May 1921.
Mary lived for a further eight years, going to her rest aged 72 years, on 18 July 1929.
The children of Michael and Mary Sheahan were:-
Michael Sheahan, died in infancy
William Sheahan, died in infancy
Catherine Frances Sheahan (Kath), born c1889, died 23 Dec 1926, aged 37, not married.
Francis Joseph Sheahan (Frank) b. c1892, killed in action 18 Apr 1917 near Grevillers, France.
John Desmond Sheahan born c1894, died 5 Oct 1927, not married, aged 32 years.
Michael Bryan Phillip Sheahan born c1897
William Patrick Sheahan born c1901
Infant son, name not known, died as a baby
Michael Sheahan first married in Carlton circa 1925 to Veronica Ann Carolan, and they had just one child, a son.
Francis Desmond Sheahan, born c1930
Michael’s second marriage was in Ballarat, at age 40, to Eunice Millicent Nichols in circa 1936, this marriage did not produce children. In 1941 Michael, a Public Servant, and Eunice were living at 526 Station Street Carlton, the previous home of his Uncle and Aunt, Michael and Sarah Brody.
Michael died at Heidelberg on 14 April 1969, aged 72. His death certificate shows his main occupation as a wool classer, and his residence at that time as 88 Armstrong Street, Middle Park, the address of his brother.
William Sheahan, born circa 1901, was also named after an earlier child who died as an infant. Around 1929 William was married at the age of 30 years to Florence May Ormsby. The wedding took place in Middle Park Melbourne, the region between Albert Park and Port Philip Bay.
It seems that William and Florence stayed in that suburb, as William’s usual place of residence was 88 Armstrong Street, Middle Park, 22 years later. William made his living as an Aircraft Production employee. He died at the age of 52 in the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Parkville, on 24 December 1953.
William and Florence Sheahan were not blessed with children.
