John was the eighth child of John and Mary Whelan, and twin brother to Stephen.
John married Eliza James Rhodes in 1908 when he was 36 years of age. His occupation was that of horse trainer at the time.
We are not aware where they lived initially, but in 1923 John and Eliza were living at 75 Princes Street, Carlton, which had been the home of his mother Mary, and then his sister Mary Theresa (Bridget) until she died in 1919.
There they had a son, proudly named after his daddy and grandfather, but who sadly lived just 37 hours.
In 1933, at the age of 62 John was residing at the previous home of his sister Lily and husband Charles Coulson, 742 Drummond Street, although at that time it would have only been occupied by Walter, their son. After a long problem with arterio sclerosis, he was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital in Fitzroy where John died on 13 August 1933.
John and Eliza Whelan's one child was:-
