Jack, the seventh child of Michael and Honora, was 42 by the time he married Emily Margaret Ryan, on 8 July 1914 in Lawrence. Emily was a first cousin to Thomas Ryan who married Jack’s sister Flossie. Jack and Emily lived at Waitahuna where they raised their family. Emily died on 25 August 1941, but Jack lived for another 11 years before passing away on 22 September 1952.
Jack and Emily Whelan were blessed with four children:-
Mary Frances Honora Whelan, born 26 Apr 1915, became Mary MacManus.
Phyllis Alva Jean Whelan, born 26 Jun 1916, became Phyllis Roughan.
Kathleen Margaret Whelan (Greeta Whelan), born 31 Mar 1918, became Greeta Keenan.
Percy John Whelan, born 16 Jan 1920
Mary married Henry MacManus (Harry) on 27 December 1944. Mary and Harry lived in Dunedin with their three children:-Michael John MacManus, born 24 Nov 1945, married Lynne Smith.
Kevin Percy MacManus, born 23 Apr 1947, married Judith Roche.

Jack and Emily had named Phyllis in honour of the nurse who was present at her birth. Phyllis Whelan married Daniel (Dan) Roughan on 7 Feb 1939 at Waitahuna. They made their home in Lawrence, and raised ten children:-

James Patrick Roughan (Jim), born 11 Nov 1942, married Karen Dougherty.

Joan Margaret Roughan, born 19 Feb 1947, became Joan Gill.
Peter Joseph Roughan, born 19 May 1948, married Kay Scott.
Mary Rose Roughan, born 19 Dec 1950, but died the same day.
Claire Hyacinth Roughan, born 17 Aug 1952, became Claire Harrex.
Martin Roughan, born 9 Oct 1954 married Vivian Fiveash.
Terrence Stephen Roughan, born 31 Mar 1961, married Jan May.
Kathleen Margaret Whelan (Greeta)
Greeta Whelan married John Edward (Jock) Keenan on 28 December 1954 at Lawrence. Greeta and Jock farmed at Kapuka and their five children attended the Gorge Road School. Greeta Keenan died on 28 October 1992 in Invercargill.
Children of Jock and Greeta Keenan are:-
John Joseph, born 7 Dec 1955, married Helen Marony.
Charles Gerard (Charlie), born 23 June 1957, married Sheree McAllister.
Brigid Margaret, born 26 Dec 1958, became Brigid Ison.
Mary Louise, born 28 May 1960, became Mary Brockway.
Julie Anne, born 7 September 1961
Percy worked on the local gold mines for a time, then went to WWII with the New Zealand Army 26th Battalion, 1st Battalion Southland Regiment. During fighting in Italy at the Battle of Cassino, Percy was wounded and came home to New Zealand on the hospital ship ‘Wanganella’. When he recovered from his head injuries Percy worked on farms, including work as a shearer and in 1953 moved to the Balfour District in Southland.
Percy married Alice Doreen Churchman (known as Doreen) on 14 November 1953 at Ravensbourne and the following year he drew a block of land in the one of the ballots for ‘rehab’ farms.
Percy passed away on 11 May 1989, and Doreen on 22 August 1998.
Percy and Doreen Whelan have the following children:-
Pauline Margaret Whelan, born 4 Oct 1954, became Pauline Solomon.
Stephen Mark Whelan (Mark), born 21 Dec 1955, married Diane Pauline Kay Napper.
Philip Whelan, born 20 Apr 1957, who sadly died the same day
John Roger Whelan (Roger), born 7 Dec 1960
Timothy Daniel Whelan (Tim), born 21 Mar 1962
