Mary Whelan was born and raised in Wetherstons. She married Lawrence Hugh O'Neill (known as Hugh O’Neill), on 4 October 1893 in Lawrence. Hugh was a farmer from Palmerston and the son of Bernard O'Neill and Ann O'Neill (nee Ann Gildea).
Hugh and Mary settled in Palmerston and had three children, but sadly the last two, twins, died on the day of their birth. Hugh and Mary’s grandson Peter, (second son of daughter Evelyn) came to live with them at some stage. Peter worked on their farm ‘Meadowbank’ and Hugh and Mary left it to him to carry on after their deaths.
Hugh passed away on 10 March 1940 and Mary, just six and a half months later, on 29 November 1950.
Hugh and Mary had two girls and a boy:-
Evelyn Ellen O'Neill, born 16 Jul 1894, became Evelyn Ellis.
Hugh O'Neill, born c1895, died at birth
Mary O'Neill, born c1895, died at birth
Evelyn married Fred Allan Ellis from Thames on 23 August 1921, and they raised three children: -
Lesley Ellis, born 24 Jun 1922, became Lesley Meek.
Peter Hugh Ellis, born 10 Apr 1924, married Shirley Annette Webley.
Brian Ashlyn Ellis, born 24 Feb 1928, married Nancy Ellen Fraser
