Michael Whelan was living in the town of Donald, Victoria, around 1912, when at the age of 34 he married Caroline Peskett, daughter of Peter and Susan (nee Much) of Casterton South West Victoria.
Donald lies 280 kilometres north-west of Melbourne, and is a rural town servicing a vast wheat-growing belt.
Michael was a horse owner, trainer, and jockey well known at district race meetings. His successful horses included Donald Knight, Flash Bob, Rumble, and Casino. He became ill in 1933, spending some time in St. Arnaud's hospital, before passing away on 21st December 1933 in Donald, at age 55.
Caroline became Caroline Males when she married again to Frederick James Males in East Melbourne, around 1941. Caroline passed away in East Hawthorn in 1975, aged 81.
Francis and Caroline Whelan had six children in all, although their first baby died in infancy:-.

When she was 20 years of age Ivy May Whelan married James William Stanley Rogan at St. George’s Church, Donald in 1934. Jimmy was the son of Michael Samuel Rogan and Rosabella Mary Rogan. Ivy and Jimmy had one son and Ivy Rogan passed away in 1997.
Caroline married William Kirwen.
Jean married Denis Finn, and have children:-
John Finn
Margaret Finn.
Frances married Frederick Waters.
In 1959 John married Beryl June Valerie Russell (nee Beryl Curtis), a widow with five children. Beryl was the daughter of William Alfred Curtis and Henrietta Thwaites. John and Beryl Whelan then had a daughter:-
