According to the records Elizabeth was born in Scotland c1863, the daughter of James Brown and Margaret Ballantyne nee Margaret Devoy). Elizabeth had been widowed in May 1887 and left with three daughters. Her late husband was William Brown, hotelkeeper, and late of North Dunedin Police Force, born in Ballynena, Ireland, died in Heriot aged 33.
