In 1901 when he was 25 years of age Thomas William married Letitia Gleeson, daughter of Thomas Gleeson and Annie (nee Annie Heaney).
Thomas William was a grocer in the early days of his married life, and he and Letitia settled in Carlton, first at 78 Newry Street, then 669 Drummond Street. By 1907 they were at 3 David Street.
Electoral records for 1938 show Letitia and Thomas, by then a labourer, living at 216 McPherson Street together with their two youngest children; Letitia, a carton maker, and son Francis, a salesman.
Letitia lived to the age of 79, passing away in 1954 at Vaucluse Private Hospital, Coburg North Melbourne, and Thomas passed away the following year, 15 August 1955. At that time he was living at 98 Vale Street, East Melbourne.
On his death certificate, Thomas’ occupation is shown as Inspector, Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works.
Thomas and Letitia Whelan had six children:-
Dorothy Whelan, born c.1902, died in 1903 aged 15 months.
Thomas Whelan, born c.1904, died 1905 aged 7 months.
Kathleen Mary Whelan, born c.1906, became Kathleen Mary Schmidt
Eileen Gladys Whelan, born c.1909, died 1910 aged 17 months.
Letitia Veronica, born c 1912, became Letitia Veronica Parsons

Kathleen Whelan married Arthur Frederick Francis Schmidt at St Margaret Mary’s Presbytery on 1 March 1930. Arthur was a farmer, living at 26 Moore Street, Coburg, son of Anton Schmidt, also a farmer, and Mary (nee Hardys).
Arthur and Kathleen made their home at 387 Moreland Road Carlton, where Arthur was a caterer, but by 1941 the family had moved to 106 Nicholson Street where Arthur is recorded as a Salesman.
Kathleen Schmidt (nee Whelan) lived to the age of 77 years. She died on 5 September 1983 at her place of residence, 11/3 Coweroy Street, St Kilda. M. Schmidt, of the same address, reported her death. Her husband Arthur had predeceased her.

Kathleen Deann Marie Schmidt, born c 1940, died May 1945
At the age of 26 Letitia married Alexander Parsons, a printer, son of John George Parsons and Isabel (nee Cairns).
Letitia and Alexander first lived at home with their parents at 98 Vale St, then at 32 View Hill Rd North Balwyn. They were still living there when Alexander passed away, aged 61, in 1967. Letitia lived to the age of 90, passing away in Melbourne.
Francis was a textile worker living in Punt Rd Melbourne when he married Nellie Otte in Aug 1941. His sister Letitia was one of the witnesses. Nellie was a typist, born in Ascot Vale to William August Henry Otte, a book-keeper, and Matilda (nee Shervill).

Norma Whelan, became Norma Marshall.
